THE HEARTLESS, THE HOPELESS AND THE USELESS

Nothing fills us with dread about Nigeria any more, we are way past that junction on the treacherous road to our still uncertain future. Every stage of our itinerary is littered with instances of unspeakable crimes against the person and the state. Having said that, the Mubi butchery of 40-odd students and the cold-blooded murders of 4 UniBen students have introduced another dimension in any discourse on our national life. Does one really have to ask any question about anything or of anyone any more?
Not wanting to bring into the same sphere as the aforementioned, but which could be easily classified as another national disgrace, is the occasion of Dimeji Bankole lecturing students on the reason why our country is in the doldrums today. Can anyone imagine the baby-faced political gangster and embezzler-in-chief telling us that effective and conscientious leadership is our problem? Could someone please tell him to shove his opinions up his backside, and that we don't need to be reminded of his pitiful non-existence in the moral domain. That's that. While you are at it, could it also be incumbent upon someone to remind Doyin Okupe that no matter how much we take a swipe at the membership of our Legislature, they were elected, and it is not his place to denigrate them for standing up for their roles in government. I've always said this guy is a rogue whose presence in the corridors of power is dangerous; he is quite simply a political incendiary. The sooner he's booted out the better for us all. He likes to think he is a Rottweiler when we all know he's just an inconsequential pussy cat and a mere distraction, a boil that needs lancing.
Going back to my original lamentations about the murders of our young men in Mubi and at UniBen, if only the so-called political leadership had balls, the country would not have descended so low into the pits of anarchy and institutional irresponsibility. If only they had balls, they would not be 'spending' so much on internal security without zilch to show for it. If only, just if only, Shoeless Joe had any balls, he would not have gone before the UN General Council and proclaim Nigeria was winning the war on terror and insecurity. If only we had an effective Opposition, Nigeria would have advanced just that little bit further on the road to recovery.
Can anyone really say for certain that the Opposition are any better than the current party in government, when they are guilty of the very crimes they accuse the governing party of committing? How strong is their claim to superiority in the practice of democracy when their own internal democracy sucks? Don't they all have figure heads rather than democratically elected leaders? For them to begin to have any semblance of   national relevance, they need to get serious and start practising what they preach. Feelings of self-importance on the part of their figureheads will not make them much more than regional powerhouses. What exactly do they stand for, what do they represent? Do they have any realistic programme for taking us out of the bunker of hopelessness onto the fairway of economic and social advancement? What proposals do they have about tackling the security meltdown in our society? How are they going to clamp down real hard on corruption and corrupt practices? How much are they going to sharpen their scissors to pare down the cost of governance? What are they going bring to the table when it comes to reviving our failed education and health sectors? How strong is their resolve in providing gainful employment for millions of our young and able people? These are the questions they need to ponder, and more, in the run-up to 2015. The heartless, the hopeless and the useless among their ranks have to be expunged in order for them to lay claim to the moral high ground and give Nigeria the long-awaited hope of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
Enough of gallivanting and fulminating. Enough of fustian speeches. We need vision, substance and decisive action. End of.
