REBRANDING FAILURE

Not so long ago, our President and his harem of political opportunists incessantly drummed it into our ears that Nigeria, despite all credible evidence to the contrary, is devoid of all notion of insecurity. All sensible Nigerians and foreigners laughed at, and were equally incensed by, this odious assertion. For these cretins in Aso Rock to actually expect normal people to take them seriously is particularly galling, to say the least. No sooner had they rolled out the latest testament to their ineptitude did two high-profile abductions blow their irksome assertion out of the water. Okonjo-Iweala's mother abducted in broad daylight, promptly followed by Oluwole Rotimi's wife. These made headlines because of their statuses; you can make your own mind up about the scores of others unreported due to their lack of prominence. Yet, in Jonathan's world, all is well.
Mind, no one is putting all the blame for all these criminal infractions at Jonathan's doorstep, but rather scowling at his utterly insensitive and contemnible attempt at rebranding failure. All of these are happening under his watch, and while these are not new phenomena by any means, their occurrences have gathered pace in an alarming fashion. Whilst one should sympathise with the recent victims of abduction and their families (unconfirmed reports have it that Iweala's mother has been released), one must also spare a thought for those that have gone unreported even though many have resulted in deaths and, physical, emotional and mental incapacitation.
Abductions, armed robberies, terrorist attacks, unfettered corruption and executive impudence are the hallmarks of our current political dispensation. Still these masters of the art of calumny tag anyone that attacks this regime of ruination as impertinent provocateurs and imbecilic traitors. Just as we thought this government couldn't possibly get any worse, even if it tried, more garbage gets thrown at us. Revelations of more improprieties from all angles come to the fore. Aminu Lamido, a son of Lamido (Jigawa State governor and an aspiring Presidential candidate) attempting to smuggle $50k out of Aminu Kano airport; N195b unspent pension fund missing; a former governor absconding to evade trial for a N4b embezzlement charge. The list is endless. Still, in Jonathan's world, all is well.
If only these words could reverberate in his ears: "Who is so deaf or so blind as he that wilfully will neither hear nor see?" (J. Heywood, Dialogue Of Proverbs, 1546)
