The recent political developments in the country ought not to come as a huge surprise to most ardent watchers of the national political landscape. What should really be a surprise is why it has taken so long to reach the present state. As regular readers of this blog would concur, previous numerous posts on this blog predicted the fallout that has now taken a firm hold in the PDP. What seemed impossible for a time became inevitable; it became a matter of when rather than if. The events of yesterday's PDP National Convention should be music to Nigerians' ears and should gladden our hearts. Saturday, the 31st of August 2013, will be a date to be remembered in the political history of our nation. It was the day that the shackles of multi-faceted and multi-layered concerted robbery of our commonwealth were broken. I have never known a better case for a moment of schadenfreude.
Of course we shouldn't concern ourselves with the reasons behind the downfall of the PDP. What we should be paying a most serious attention to is how it will positively affect the new dynamics of the polity. The earthquake that erupted in the PDP, and which will surely engulf it in the final analysis, has put the final nail in the coffin of Jonathan, and his most ridiculous aspirations for 2015. This monstrously unwieldly political party of rogues has been ripped apart by the very unwholesome ideals that held it together for so long - thievery, greed and insane egos.
The registrations of the PDM and the APC, and the likelihood of the registration of a splinter PDP, have afforded Nigerians a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meticulously pick the next wave of politicians they want to run their affairs from 2015. We now have the unique chance to separate the wheat from the chaff. It goes without saying that Nigerians are now wiser and smarter than ever before, having gone through 14 years of PDP and seen their lives and hopes taken such a serious pounding. It's a waste of time now to keep repeating what a monumental fraud the PDP has been. One final favour Nigerians now require from the PDP is to nominate Jonathan as their presidential candidate for 2015. That would indeed be the icing on the cake.
The stage is now set for Nigerians to take a deep breath and look to the future with a measure of confidence. There has now been a reversal in our fortune and it's up to us to make the most of it. We must ask serious questions of our politicians and take a hard look at their past performances, or lack of them.
Issues of religion and ethnicity should be cast aside in our common pursuit of good governance and accountability. Our country's international standing is at stake; we must make a concerted effort at repairing, and enhancing, it. We must be taken seriously once again. We must shed the unwelcome label of unfettered corruption and gross mismanagement.
We have reason to be optimistic but the hard work of getting our country back has only just begun. This is no time to be complacent. We must remain strong and vigilant. Our time has come. Happy days are here again. God bless Nigeria.
