HAPPY BIRTHDAY

I think we should be joyous today that we all still have a country we can rightly, if not very proudly, call our home. If one were to consider the travails of our beloved nation over the past forty nine years, one would find very little reason to be over the moon about. However, if one considers the fact that, despite the vicissitudes of the last five decades or so, we, as a people, are still standing and hoping for a better and brighter future for all, this alone calls for celebration.
What I find particularly irksome is the pontificating of our inglorious ‘public’ figures to imbibe their pharisaical prating about the need to be law-abiding and model citizens, as if it were the Sermon On The Mount. I think they should shut up and leave the stage to those who genuinely have the interests of the populace at heart; they should repair to their miserable former existence and seek forgiveness for the damage they have collectively caused innocent Nigerians, and for the ruinous state they have left our public services, education, industry and even our social system.
It’s not all doom and gloom, as I believe the proven industry, resourcefulness and resilience of our people will come to the fore and together we can, and will, build an enduring peaceful, progressive and prosperous future.
Happy Birthday, Nigeria. Long may you live.
